Prof. Dingyuan Zhang

Dingyuan Zhang began studying piano at the age of three. As a child, she won multiple competitions and was frequently invited to perform on national television. At twelve, she was admitted to the Middle School Affiliated with the Central Conservatory of Music, studying with Prof. Hui Zhong and Prof. Pingguo Zhao. At fourteen, she was invited by China Central Television (CCTV) to perform Schumann’s Kinderszenen and participate in a televised artist feature. At seventeen, she appeared as soloist with the China Youth Symphony Orchestra, performing Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A Minor.

In 1994, she entered the Central Conservatory of Music, studying with Prof. Bigang Chen, and graduated with distinction in 1998, earning her Bachelor’s degree. In 1999, she was accepted with top ranking into the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) to study with Prof. Rainer Becker, Chair of the Piano Department. Due to her exceptional Master’s performance, she was promoted directly into the university’s Meisterklasse (Artist Diploma) program in 2003. In 2008, she completed her Doctorate-equivalent Artist Diploma in Piano Performance, certified by the Chinese Ministry of Education as a Doctor of Musical Arts, following a highly acclaimed graduation recital at the Berlin Philharmonie Chamber Hall.

During her studies, Zhang was a three-time recipient of the Hindemith Scholarship and the university’s merit award, and she frequently appeared in charitable performances as an outstanding student representative. In 2009, she continued her academic development as a visiting scholar at the University of North Texas, studying with Prof. Joseph Paul, a distinguished American piano pedagogue.

Prof. Zhang is a prizewinning pianist of both national and international competitions and the first Chinese pianist to perform at the Berlin Philharmonie. Her honors include the Chinese Piano Works Award, Second Prize (First Prize not awarded) at the China–France Mido Piano Competition, Third Prize at the International Schnabel Piano Competition, and First Prize at the Third National Piano Faculty Invitational Competition.

As a chamber musician, she has collaborated with distinguished Chinese artists such as Fei Song, Zhongshan Wang, and Xianghua Ma, touring and recording extensively. As a soloist, Zhang has performed worldwide in venues including the Berlin Philharmonie, Konzerthaus Berlin, Steinway Hall, Haydnsaal in Vienna, Wichita State University Hall, Florida International University Concert Hall, Beijing Concert Hall, Beijing 21st Century Theatre, Shanghai Concert Hall, Shanghai Oriental Art Center, and Hong Kong City Hall.

Her concerto appearances include Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra under Morgenstern, Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 under Renchang Fu, and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Suzhou Symphony Orchestra under Xieyang Chen. She has also performed under the direction of Prof. Runyu Hou and received artistic guidance and praise from internationally renowned pianists such as Kämmerling (Germany), Prof. Jablonskaya (former Chair of Piano, The Juilliard School), and Prof. Rados (Hungary).

Prof. Zhang has released several albums and publications, including:

  • Resonances of the Heart (DVD)

  • Piano Duet Method – Technical Analysis and Interpretive Commentary on Masterworks (Pedagogical Text)

  • Music Education in German Universities under the Bologna Process (Monograph)

 

As an educator and scholar, she co-authored a children’s music textbook published by Otanes Verlag (Germany) and has published more than ten peer-reviewed academic articles in leading journals. Her paper “Dynamic Characteristics in Debussy’s Piano Music” received First Prize at the Fourth National Piano Pedagogy Symposium for University Faculty.

 

She currently leads two major Ministry of Education Social Science Research Projects:

  • “Insights from the Bologna Process: The Structure of Music Education in German Universities” (Project No. 16YJC760070)

  • “Interdisciplinary Research on Musical Performance through the Lens of Neuroaesthetics” (Project No. 22YJA760101)

 

Prof. Zhang frequently serves as a jury member for major national and international piano competitions, presents at academic conferences, and offers masterclasses at international music festivals. Her students have won top prizes at leading competitions and gained admission to world-renowned conservatories.

​

In recognition of her contributions to piano performance and education, Dr. Dingyuan Zhang was included in the “Famous Chinese Pianists” series published by the American International Press.

​

Dr. Zhang is China’s first Fazioli Global Ambassador and a Grotrian (Gaotian) Piano Artist.
