Mexican conductor and violist Sergio Castro Medina is currently pursuing a Doctor of Arts degree in Orchestral and Choral Conducting at the University of Northern Colorado, where he serves as Assistant Conductor of the UNC Symphony Orchestra under the mentorship of Dr. Andrés Felipe Jaime and Assistant Conductor of Choirs under the mentorship of Dr. Jill Burgett. At UNC, he is also Assistant Conductor of Coro Polaris, has served as Chorus Master and Assistant Conductor for opera productions, and performs with the Chamber Choir and Latinx Beat Ensemble.

Castro Medina is recognized for his commitment to the performance, promotion, and preservation of Latin American music. He is the founder and Artistic Director of the Camerata Anima Tonalli Orchestra, with which he has presented contemporary Latin American repertoire internationally, including performances in Italy. He also founded and led the Symphonia Orchestra at the Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP) for nearly fifteen years, developing the ensemble into one of Mexico’s leading university orchestras. Previously, he served as Principal Conductor de la Orquesta Sinfónica del Conservatorio de Puebla, and has appeared as a guest conductor with ensembles including the Orquesta Filarmónica 5 de Mayo, the Beloit Symphony Orchestra, the Wellsboro Wind Ensamble, la Orquesta de Cámara de la BUAP, la Orquesta Sinfónica de Coyoacán, among others.

A passionate advocate for musical research and cultural heritage, Castro Medina has collaborated on projects dedicated to the revival of historical repertoire preserved in the archives of the Puebla Cathedral Basilica. These performances brought previously unperformed works back to the stage and were developed in collaboration with musicologist Dr. María Luisa Vilar and Fr. Francisco Vázquez.

Throughout his career, Castro Medina has collaborated with contemporary composers including Brian R. Banks, Luis Alberto Reyes Santiesteban, Miguel de la Rosa, Aarón González, and Ana Cristina Caelen, participating in the premieres of new works. He has also worked with distinguished soloists such as Daesik Cha, Enrique Castillo, Misa Ito, Lulú Galindo, Manuel Espinás, Nadia Borislova, Eduardo Carpinteyro, and Juan Hermida.

As a violist, he has been a member of Camerata Gioia since 2010, serving both as Principal Violist and Artistic Director. With the ensemble, he participated in an international tour of Germany featuring From the Cathedrals to the Festivities, a program devoted to Latin American and Colonial Mexican repertoire.

In addition to his artistic career, Castro Medina served as General Director of Cultural Affairs at UDLAP from 2014 to 2022, where he led major artistic initiatives, strengthened performing arts programs, developed cultural festivals, and fostered institutional partnerships that contributed to UDLAP becoming the first Mexican institution to receive the QS Five Stars distinction in Arts.

He holds a Master of Music degree from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania, where he studied conducting with Adam Brennan, and a Bachelor of Music degree from the Universidad de las Américas Puebla. His conducting studies have also included work with Oleg Proskurnia, Leo Korchmar, Gisela Crespo, Jeff Talley, Fernando Lozano, José Luis Castillo, Ronald Zollman, Arturo Castro, and Roberto Durán.
